RM2,000 Minimum Wage in 2027: What It Means for Malaysian Workers

Oct 16, 2026

The government has announced that the minimum wage will rise from RM1,700 to RM2,000 from June 2027. The minister said more than four million workers will benefit.

Who is exempt?

Businesses with annual sales below RM50 million are exempt from this rise. The government says this gives smaller firms time to adjust. So your employer’s size matters. If you work for a small company, your pay may not rise automatically.

What should you do now?

  1. Check your payslip and contract to confirm your basic salary.
  2. Ask HR or your employer how the change will apply to you.
  3. Build skills and certificates so your pay is based on your value, not only the minimum.
  4. Compare vacancies. Employers who must pay RM2,000 may be hiring, and others may raise offers to stay competitive.
